Living a Low Carb Lifestyle with Diabetes

I get it — committing to a low-carb life felt huge and kind of scary at first. Diet changes and chronic illness are heavy things to navigate, and your worries are valid. I’m here to tell you: it can be done. You can satisfy cravings and still take control of your health.

I live with a lot of gratitude for my insulin and my Dexcom continuous glucose monitor. The CGM changed everything for me — it lets me see how foods affect my spikes and drops and helps me stay steady throughout the day. There are great CGM options out there, even if insurance isn’t covering much. And remember: what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. There are some foods that spike almost everyone, but a lot of reactions are surprisingly individual. That means you’ll need to test, tweak, and learn from your own numbers.

Test, re-test, and keep perspective. Your hormones, genetics, stress, sleep, and even the time of day will affect your glucose and A1C. I’ve been managing diabetes for 18 years and following keto for almost nine, and I still learn new things all the time. Health and wellness are huge, fascinating fields — and the experimenting never really stops. I’m grateful for endocrinologists, ER teams, and other professionals, but at the end of the day I’m the person who cares most about my own health and choices.

My prayers and best wishes are with you on this journey. If you have questions — practical, personal, or curious — ask away. I’m happy to share what’s worked (and what hasn’t).
